Stop Rambling ❌

Oct 26, 2023

Read time: 1 minute

Nobody cares.

This comes from the most well intentioned place.

One common mistake I see coaching Product Designers in The Craft's mock interviews is that some spend waaaaay to much time talking. And this isn’t just for interviews, keep this in mind for any public speaking or presentations. As a designer, we present a lot!

In an interview, cut the backstory and focus on what matters.

💡 The interviewers are not as invested as you are.

💡 They want their question answered, not a novel.

💡 They don't actually need all that information.

💡 They do have other questions they are trying to get to.

When an interviewer asks you a question, get straight to the point and make sure you ANSWER their question. You should not be talking for several minutes while the interviewer stares at you. Do not give them a chance to space out. 😂 If they have additional questions that you did not answer in your response, they will ask.

Here's how to nail an interview specifically:

  1. Write out your answers to common questions.

  2. Cut it down and make it as short as you can.

  3. Practice saying it out loud.

If you're confused about how to give strong answers, use the STAR method:

Situation

Task

Action

Result

This is a bit of tough love for the ones who tend to ramble but I want you to actually be successful in receiving that job offer. 💚
